Computing Science |
Welcome to my home page for topics related to computing science. I'm using this set of pages as a repository for graduate work I'm doing at the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (Virginia Tech), as well as a place to park other information (such as travel). Take a look at What's New in this web.
What's New050703: Alas, GeoURL appears to have gone defunct sometime in the past year and a half. This summer's trip is to Nova Scotia and Newfoundland; the description of the plan and eventually, the execution, can be found here. 031207: Added a link to GeoURL. 031101: A few weeks ago, I started a photoBlog at wilsonjw.textamerica.com. The textamerica site is oriented toward people with camera-equipped cellular telephones, but the site works just fine for camera-equipped PDAs (like my iPaq 5555 with Veo camera). 030902: Was doing a bit of work at home this evening, on the subject of "net-centric warfare". I ran across an interesting reference from the early days. Note to self: make sure folks spell your name correctly. 030830: Started a real Blog at wilsonjw.blogspot.com. Should make it much easier to make notes on web pages.... 030825: News flash. Lorraine and I were at the local Safeway last night, where I learned that Swanson's is having a special, promotional campaign aimed at folks who enjoy(?) Swanson's Hungry Man All-Day Breakfast. Based on what I read on the packaging, you can get one of these beauties ABSOLUTELY FREE. All you have to do is fill out the form conveniently located on the box, and mail the hummer in with your receipt. 030823: Lorraine, Emily, Joe, and I went to Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks this summer. We backpacked in the Jennie Lakes Wilderness and Kings Canyon National Park, and day-hiked in Sequoia National Park. We had a great time. We also visited Las Vegas, Death Valley National Park, Yosemite National Park, and a lot of places in between. We took this picture at the trailhead, as we hiked out of the Jennie Lakes Wilderness. 030518: I ran across a review of Swanson's Hungry Man All-Day Breakfast some time back. The review is a stitch. I didn't think much about it after I couldn't find the product at our local Safeway. Well, I was at the Safeway today to pick up a few things, and lo and behold, what should I find? None other than Swanson's Hungry Man All-Day Breakfast. Wow. I won't be conducting my own research to find out if the review is fair.... 030504: Posted a link to Richard Thayer's glossary of terms here. Say what you mean, mean what you say. 030411 -- 030413: Emily and I went to Space Camp at the U. S. Space and Rocket Center in Huntsville, Alabama for the weekend. We had a great time. 030228: Our SIAP System Engineering Team completed their first time box today. The model, which implemented basic track management functionality, compiled and ran. This was a major milestone for the program. 030201: Monday, we begin object oriented analysis and design for the Single Integrated Air Picture. For the past two years, we've been doing the engineering for both SIAP Block 0 and SIAP Block 1, and have been making good progress on the Integrated Architecture for Tactical Battle Management and Command and Control (BMC2). With the approval of Program Decision Memorandum I, we begin to build a complete behavior model of tactical command and control that can be converted into source code for integration into tactical command and control nodes. 021221: The semester ended yesterday when we submitted grades. I was a Distance Learning Instructor for Software Design and Quality (CS5744) again this semester (Fall 2002). I had a good group of energized students who generally did very well in the course. It's nice to be able to shift gears to focus all energy on the dissertation. 021214: Ran across a picture of USS ROARK this afternoon, while searching for clip art of the AN/SPY-1 Radar System. I was on the ship at the time this picture was taken in the spring of 1979. The photograph is a bit grainy, but it's fine for seeing gross detail. We took the ship into the yard at Lockheed Shipbuilding and Construction Company (now defunct) in beautiful West Seattle in August 1979. I spent many a minute crossing the old West Seattle Bridge, memorialized here. Seattle and King County history buffs will enjoy this site. I also ran across a site that contains photographs of IX 503 (ex USS NUECES (APB 40)). I lived in IX 503 during the period ROARK was uninhabitable. I later ran into IX 503 at National Steel and Shipbuilding Company (NASSCO) while USS PRINCETON (CG 59) was undergoing Post Shakedown Availability in 1989. 021201: Lorraine and I had a nice Thanksgiving weekend. We did the Thanksgiving feast a bit differently this year. Instead of spending the day cooking, Lorraine ordered the whole meal from Whole Foods (formerly Fresh Fields) -- it was terrific (and saved a lot of time, which we spent doing other things). Yesterday, we headed down to the Nature Awareness School to attend Del and Kate Hall's wedding. 021111: Lorraine and I just returned from a relaxing weekend at the Wildernest Inn. Hank and Nate gave us a gift certificate for a three night stay there, which we traded in this past weekend. We arrived on Friday evening (late) and stayed through Monday afternoon. We had a wonderful time. Images from this past weekend can be found here. 021013: Lorraine's folks stopped by for a visit. 020919: The school year is coming along nicely. Things are quite busy at work, as the FY04 budget proceeds through the process, and as interest in transformation and interoperability increases. I've continued to add links to this site that are useful for Navy work, as well as Virginia Tech work. 020826: The school year has begun. I've largely finished the web site that contains notes from the Alaska trip. 020813: Got back from Alaska on Sunday, 11 August 2002. Great trip -- spent a lot of time outdoors, as well as attending part of the 13th Inuit Studies Conference at the University of Alaska at Anchorage and visiting the University of Alaska at Fairbanks. 020622: It's been a busy summer so far...it's slowed down a bit now, so I'll be able to settle in to more reading and writing. 020601: Lorraine and I got married at Mason Neck State Park in Fairfax County, Virginia. 020503: Very close to the end of the semester -- just about time to start writing this summer. 020301: I got the news from the Graduate Programs Committee that I passed the Ph.D. Qualifying Examination -- very pleasant news. 020222: The Ph.D. Qualifying Examination was due this past Monday morning at 0800. It was an interesting exam: six questions covering the topic of networks and systems. We'd been given a little over two weeks to compose open-ended answers to the questions. The plan is to call us in for oral examinations of the questions and our answers sometime in the next few weeks. If I pass the exam, I'll be going right into the pick-a-topic and build-a-committee phase of the process. The goal is to complete in spring 2004. -- Jeffery W. Wilson
